    There's $200 on the line Friday night as nine mascots face-off for cash and bragging rights on the World's Richest Acre during the first Fridays After 5 concert of the season.
    The costumed dancers will hold the Winter Elder Stage from 6 p.m. to 7 followed by returning musical guest Shinebox for a two-hour showing beginning at 7:30.
    According to Main Street Manager Clara Chaffin, mascots from six schools and two other organizations answered the area-wide dance-off challenge.

    'Quality of life' can't be examined under a microscope, quantified on a calculator or dissected in a laboratory. Instead, researchers from Stephen F. Austin State University's Center for a Livable World are assessing Kilgore's livability through face-to face interaction, plain questions and walking the city's streets and sidewalks.
    According to Dr. William Forbes, the center's focus here is to explore ways the community can develop, becoming more attractive for current and potential residents. A pilot project that could serve as a model for similar cities, the Kilgore livability study comes at no cost to the city and is currently underway. Researchers are meeting with locals to survey everything from demographics to available housing, business diversity, social services, planning and environmental factors.

    The 2011-2012 Leadership Kilgore class’ latest February outing brought the mixture of local high school juniors and important community members to several locations about Kilgore to learn about the economy.
    Leadership Kilgore participated in Economic Development Day on Feb. 15. The class met with representatives of Kilgore Economic Development Committee and local businesses and industries.The objective of the class was to create a basic understanding of economic development.

    Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in January, down from 7.4 percent in December, and down from 8.1 percent in January 2011. The Texas unemployment rate is one full percentage point below the national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. Texas has remained below the national unemployment rate for 61 months. January’s is the lowest unemployment rate in Texas since April 2009.

    The Spring Film Festival at Kilgore’s 4 Star Cinema offers moviegoers the opportunity to see some of the best films of the past year, says manager Rob Ellwood. Ellwood estimates about 2,000 people attend at least one of the film festivals each year.

    The Spring Festival starts April 18 and concludes May 8.
