    General Dynamics announced today it is entering the Wind Energy market with plans to manufacture and sell General Dynamics'-branded wind turbines through its SATCOM Technologies, Inc. business unit.

    SATCOM Technologies, headquartered in Newton, N.C., is a leading supplier of emergency, strategic and tactical satellite ground terminals and communications test equipment. The Company will provide engineering, field service, and maintenance support for wind turbines manufactured at its facilities in Longview and Kilgore, Texas. The turbines will be produced for sale in North and South America, Africa and U.S. territories and military bases worldwide.

    There are businesses eager to set up shop in downtown Kilgore, but with only a few spaces available they have to wait in line.

    "I currently have two people looking for a place to go downtown, but there's no actual building open and available and ready to go for them," says Main Street Manager Clara Chaffin. "There's no place for them to go. Which is good – it's a good problem to have downtown."

    Awards were given to the winners of the East Texas Regional Science Fair yesterday at Kilgore College. Students from Districts 7 and 8 traveled to Kilgore to display the results of their research and projects.

    There are a slew of Main Street-sponsored events on tap this spring and early summer as the program brings back Fridays After 5, the farmers market and assists with the upcoming Spring Fling and Cinema Under the Stars.

    This year's series of monthly Friday evening concerts begin March 30. The 2012 Spring Fling, sponsored by downtown merchant's, is scheduled for April 28.

    Caterpillar Inc. earned an incentive payment of $140,000 by exceeding the job creation terms of its agreement with Kilgore Economic Development, which was signed in 2007.

    “Things are looking very bright in Kilgore,” said Caterpillar Factory Manager Ron Ames. “We are able to get a skilled workforce and assistance from the community. The business climate here allows us to continue to expand.”
